A 14 member Ogidi History Project Team (OHPT) to document the history of Ogidi-Ijumu, a Yoruba community in Kogi State, Nigeria has been set up.

 

The Ogidi Development Union which set up the Team said the time had come for the community to adequately capture its history and document it for the present and future generations.

 

The Team is headed by Chief Abiodun Ehindero, the Oliha of Ono Ogidi and retired General Manager with the West African Portland Cement Company Plc. Has the Oluotun of Otun Ogidi, Chief Joseph Alaba Alamoh as Deputy Team Leader.

Other members are:

Chief Francis Olayinka, Oliha of Ohi Ogidi

A lecturer at the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Mr. Ilesanmi Ogunleye is the Secretary of the team with Mr. Jerome Owonubi as Assistant Secretary.

 

According to the terms of reference spelt out in their letters of appointment, members will:
• Gather all available oral tradition and history of Ogidi
• Gather all documented materials on the history of Ogidi from all available sources
• Collate such oral and written materials in a coherent form and determine the best methodology to adopt for their documentation
• Publish such documentation in a book form and advise on the best time to make a public presentation of the publication
• Suggest possible ways of raising funds for the project
• Render quarterly reports to the Ogidi Development Union on the progress of the project
• Put in place any other machinery germane to the successful implementation of the project

 

Reacting to his appointment as Team Leader, Chief Ehindero promised that although the reservoirs of oral history and tradition in Ogidi were drying up, the team would make the community proud at the end of the assignment.
He also promised to deploy his skills and other personal attributes to ensure the success of the project.


The Ogidi History Project and Team was inaugurated at the Community Hall, Agegbe, Ogidi at 10 am on Saturday, September 20, 2014. According to the accounts of Chief M. A Olupeka, the Nupe war was in three phases:
1. Raiding and Ogba Tributes
2. The main war including Ogidi Grand Alliance
3. The Royal Niger Company and End of the war
