Ipowu Mountain

 

Ipowu Mountain is reputed to be the highest point in the Kukuruku high land and indeed in Kogi and Kwara States of Nigeria.It is estimated to be around 2500 feet. It was the Ogidi fortress during the war with the Nupe invaders in the 1880s.

 

Up on this mountain Ogidi people kept her non-combatant population and the wounded. The mountain has a large acreage of fertile fadama land at its top. There is a large expance of flat rock surface used as housing area, a market place and a civic centre. The mountain had its own water supply system. This mystical mountain has continued to attract tourists from all over the world. They come there to see the relics and artifacts showing how our people lived in the the past much of which have been collected through the hard work and dedication of Chief Mrs Nike Okundaye.

Mrs Nike Okundaye has four gallery centres in Nigeria: Lagos, Oshogbo, Ogidi & Abuja. Apart from the welcoming and the innately accomodating spirits of this people, the community can boast of the richness of its cultural heritage, its natural architectural landscape dotted with many hills and mountains with lakes, caves and streams, its music and dance, its foods and delicacies and its aethetically artistic and entrepreneurial character as exemplified by the likes of Mrs Nike Okundaye, the late Twins Seven Seven and  the late Zacheus Oloruntoba (aka Marapaka). Let us take you through the features that formed the natural fortress against the enemies of this community during the war with the Nupe in the 1880s.
